Vidura is renowned as a wise advisor and was respected by both the royal family and the commoners. He was revered for his righteous and impartial advice irrespective of whether it favored a Pandava or a Kaurava. He acted as the minister and advisor of Queen Dhritarashtra, the father of the Kauravas. Despite this, he openly criticized Dhritarashtra for his wrongdoings, but in a non-confrontational manner. Such was his profound respect for Dharma that a single passage from his advice to Dhritarashtra in the Mahabharata is written and taught in every Hindu school.
Vidura used his ingenuity and wit to resolve many a dilemma, including the famous game of dice between Kauravas and Pandavas. He was one of the major advocates of peace instead of war. He even suggested a negotiation of a treaty when the Kauravas wanted a compromise from the Pandavas.
Even though Vidura does not appear in all versions of Mahabharata, he is an important character and a symbol of righteousness and justice. He is known for his wisdom, uprightness, and integrity. He represents the ideal in which humans should strive for. Vidura was much respected by everyone and his ideas and advice always held utmost importance.
